Mold

The missing piece was hiding in our walls.

No smell. No water damage. No staining anywhere we could see. Our home looked like any other loving family home on the outside. But hidden mold turned out to be one of the biggest missing pieces of the puzzle while my children were struggling with chronic symptoms, PANS, and autism. If your family has been doing everything right and still feels stuck, I want you to know about this one.

Our story

For a long time, we had no idea. Our house had no musty smell, no visible signs of water damage, and no staining anywhere. It was only later that we learned we had hidden mold in fourteen walls of our house and underneath our hardwood floors.

It started with leaky windows on the outside of the house. With the humidity and the rain, the mold was just always growing, slowly and quietly, behind the surfaces we touched every day.

When I finally heard about mold and suspected it, we had our house tested twice by reputable mold companies. Both times, they did air testing and an inspection only, and both times we were told our house was completely fine.

It was not until I started looking everywhere myself, because my kids' symptoms matched up so well with mold, that I found old water stains under the windows and underneath our carpet. That is when I called the insurance company. They came out, opened the walls, and we finally found it.

What we found under our hardwood floors. From the top, the floor looked perfectly fine.

We also had my daughter tested for mycotoxins, and she came back highly toxic for five different kinds. Five. In a house that two professionals had cleared.

Why mold matters so much

In most of the families I work with, mold turns out to be a huge part of the picture. Here is why. Mycotoxins, the toxins mold produces, can quietly shape how the whole body feels and behaves.

It keeps the nervous system on high alert

Mycotoxins can hold a nervous system stuck in chronic fight or flight. The body never gets the message that the emergency is over, so it stays braced, reactive, and exhausted. If you or your child seem unable to settle no matter what you try, this is one reason why.

It fuels inflammation everywhere

Mold exposure drives systemic inflammation. A body carrying constant inflammation becomes the perfect host for viruses to thrive, which is why so many mold affected families also battle one illness after another that never fully resolves.

It feeds yeast overgrowth in the gut

The gut often takes a direct hit. Mycotoxins can encourage yeast overgrowth, which brings its own layer of symptoms: cravings, rashes, bloating, mood swings, and foggy thinking.

It blocks the goodness you are already giving

Even when you are feeding your family beautifully, mold can interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals. That is part of why families can do so many right things and still feel stuck.

You are not missing something as a parent. Sometimes the thing affecting your family is invisible, and it is in the walls.

Why our house tested fine

This is the part I wish someone had told me. Air testing and a standard inspection can miss hidden mold. Mold tucked inside walls, under floors, or behind carpet does not always release enough spores into the air to show up on a test, especially if the water source is small and slow, like ours was.

What I have learned since is to trust the pattern of your family's symptoms and to look with your own eyes. Where there are windows, look at the walls around them and underneath them. Where there is carpet, look underneath it, especially near exterior walls and anywhere water has ever been.

How to test, in plain language

If any of this sounds like your family, here are the two tests I recommend most often.

For your home

The ERMI test

This is the test I recommend for the house itself. ERMI uses dust sampling to look for the DNA of mold species inside your home, which catches what air testing often misses. It tells you not just whether mold is present, but which kinds and how much.

For your body

Mycotoxin testing

This shows whether mycotoxins are actually in your body. I recommend testing through Mosaic or RealTime Labs. When my daughter was tested, seeing five different mycotoxins at high levels finally gave our whole family answers we had been chasing for years.

Signs it might be hiding in your home too

You know your family best. If several of these sound familiar, mold is worth a closer look.

  • Symptoms that flare at home and ease when you travel or visit someone else
  • A child whose health changed after a move, a renovation, a new roof, or heavy rain
  • Chronic congestion, coughs, or ear issues that never quite go away
  • Anxiety, mood swings, or regression that no therapy fully explains
  • Musty smells, bubbling paint, or stains near windows, baseboards, or under carpet
  • One family member getting worse while the rest of the house feels off too

This page shares my experience and what I have learned. It is not medical advice, and it is not a diagnosis. Please work with a practitioner who will look at the whole picture, including your home.
