Lower tox living

Lower-Tox Swaps We Actually Use + Love.

These are products we actually use or brands I feel comfortable reaching for. You do not need to replace everything overnight. Start with what your family uses most and swap things out as they run out.

Everyday cleaners

  • Branch Basics Concentrate
  • Blueland Multi-Surface and Bathroom tablets
  • Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds

One good concentrate can replace a cabinet full of bottles.

Simple cleaning staples

  • Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap
  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar where appropriate
  • Hydrogen peroxide when appropriate

Some of the most effective tools in our home cost the least.

Fresher air

  • Open windows and good ventilation
  • A HEPA air purifier
  • A quality HVAC filter chosen for your system

For home fragrance, I would use less fragrance rather than replacing plug-ins with a house full of essential oils.

Things to ditch

These are the ones I would gently let go of first, because they are used often and touch the air and surfaces your family lives with every day.

  • Fragrance plug ins and air fresheners. They release scent around the clock. Open windows and fresh air do the same job for free.
  • Plastic water bottles, both disposable and reusable plastic. Switch to stainless steel or glass, especially for water you drink every day.
  • Harsh cleaning agents like bleach, Clorox wipes, and Lysol sprays. Castile soap, Branch Basics, or simple staples like vinegar and hydrogen peroxide clean well without the harsh fumes.

No guilt here. Use up what you have or pass it along, and replace each one as it runs out. That is exactly how we did it in our home.

One safe step at a time

If a lower-tox home feels like one more thing on your list, pick a single swap this month. The laundry detergent, the deodorant, the water bottle your child carries every day. Small steps done gently are the ones that last.
